Image Dentistry uses the two most common types of sedation in the practice to make patients feel comfortable and relaxed during treatments: (1) Oral Conscious Sedation and (2) Inhalation Sedation.
With both types of sedation the patient will experience a state of very deep relaxation. You can still speak and respond to the requests of others.
Advantages of Oral Conscious Sedation:
- Easy to administer: Swallow a small pill
- It is safe and easy to monitor
- Works well for most people (adults and children)
- Low Cost
Still, there are some disadvantages to the Oral Sedation: The level of Sedation is not easily changed. Someone must drive you to and from your dental appointment and there is no analgesic (pain relief effect).
Inhalation Sedation with Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen ("laughing gas") (dagegen) has been used as the most frequent and primary means of sedation for many years. This kind of sedation has a lot of advantages and almost no disadvantages: it should not be used with people who have respiratory problems (Asthma and Emphysema) and with people who are claustrophobic - since they do not like anything covering their nose. 35% of all US dentists offer Nitrous Oxide Sedation to their patients.
Advantages of Dental Inhalation Sedation:
- Works well for mild to moderate anxiety
- Rapid Onset
- Flexible duration can be used for any appointment length
- Absolute Control. It is easy to quickly control the level of sedation which may be altered moment to
moment.
- People recover quickly
- Very few side effects
- There is an analgesic effect
- You can drive yourself to and from your dental appointment
- You can return to normal activities immediately
We will decide with the patient which sedation would be best for them. Treatment will only start after a detailed consultation.
